Gearing up

To play ultimate, all you need to wear is comfortable clothes and good footwear – everyone has their own style preferences. However, maybe you are looking for something to go the extra mile, maybe a more professional look, or maybe something to help you stand out from the crowd?

Well, I’m certainly no fashion genius. Yet, I’ve seen enough people from across the country playing ultimate to notice a few stand-out trends, in addition to a few tips; as when you look good, you play greater. So, take a look at my unisex ultimate style guide below, and maybe treat yourself a little.

  1. Baggy equals better

As I’ve already mentioned, you want to play in comfy kit that has a lot of room to manoeuvre. Also, it looks class when leaping up in the air for the disc that you have no right in catching,

  1. Eye-catching kit

When playing for a team, your kit should represent your identity. Take a few AUDL teams for example: Pittsburgh Thunderbirds, Philadelphia Phoenix, Dallas Roughnecks. However, if you are playing casually, there are lots of options to help you stand out. Colourful jerseys and shorts patterned with sharks, watermelons or the northern lights? What more could you want?

  1. Snazy socks

Go wild, literally! There’s no more to be said.

  1. Gloves

Friction gloves are perfect to help you keep control of the disc in cold or wet weather, with extra grip to help you catch and throw. They can also be used indoor and add that professional touch to your look.

  1. The ‘joint pads’ debate

Indoor layouts can be painful, but joint pads would help relieve the crash on the knees whilst catching a worldy. However, they are not the most fashionable accessory, so do you want to go for style or practicality?

  1. Layer up

Leggings and under armour have been strongly recommended to me for outdoor matches in winter. Once again, the snazzier the better.

  1. To cap it off

Headwear is popular in ultimate. Whether its for warmth in the winter months, or to help keep the sun out of your eyes in the summer. It could even be for fun at a casual tournament – an Australian cork hat was the best I have seen. Some players can’t play without a hat, so go and find your style.

    Hi,
One thing I just love about ultimate is the fact that all you really need for a good couple of hours of fun with your mates is a flat plastic disc.
Start throwing and before you know it your group has just got bigger, because like me people love throwing a frisbee.

    Hello,
Found this blog a really awesome read. Every now and then I’ve had throw around at the beach or in the park with friends and siblings and I have managed to crack a few moves.
I am going to start university next September and I am really hoping that where I am planning on going will have an ultimate frisbee Team … or I’ll create my own!

      Hi Melanie,
Thank you for your comments! It’s great to hear you are getting involved, and with the sport’s rapid growth around the UK, I’m sure your university will have one. If not, as you said, you can make one – it could be a lot of fun!
Good luck at university and let me know if you want any hints and tips.
